Advanced Open Water Program

The Advanced Open Water Program consists of four specialty courses. For more information on each of the related specialties please click on the links below.

  • Deep Diving: There’s something attractive, exciting and mysterious about diving deep and it opens up a whole new range of dive sites which previously would be out of reach. The Snorkel Safari Deep Specialty course teaches you the proper techniques of planning and carrying out deeper dives safely.

During the course you will also learn the benefits and importance of carrying and knowing how to use a redundant air source. What this means is that you will not only have the air that is in your primary cylinder but we will also teach you either to carry and use a separate pony bottle or to dive with twin tanks.

During the course you will also gain a greater control of your buoyancy and you will learn how to safely deploy a surface marker buoy (SMB) from depth. This technique is very useful for deep diving as it aids in the communication with surface support.

  • Enriched Air Nitrox: Whether you’re into wreck diving or photography, on a dive holiday, or just diving locally, Nitrox will keep you where you want to be for longer... underwater. You will learn how you can dive longer without decompression stops, have shorter surface intervals, and enhance your diving safety.

  • Navigation: Take control of your diving experience and navigate your own dive. You will learn to navigate using a combination of natural underwater features and your compass. You’ll surprise yourself and be navigating squares, triangles and circles in no time!

  • Night & Limited Visibility: Discover the ocean’s nocturnal side and experience your favourite dive sites in a new way! You will learn and practice safe night diving and limited visibility procedures. You will literally see the ocean in a new light… your torch!

Course Format

Four Days and One Evening (Two Consecutive Weekends, Last Weekend out on a Liveaboard)

Saturday | 9am - 4pm | Deep Theory and Pool Session.

The first half of the day will be spent in the classroom and the second half will be in the pool. The pool is where you will learn deep diving skills such as submerged surface marker deployment, perfect buoyancy control for those crucial safety stops, and pony bottle use as a redundant air source.

Sunday | 9am - 4pm | Enriched Air Nitrox Theory.

We will discuss the benefits and risks involved with diving nitrox safely. You will also learn the correct procedures for nitrox use and you will practice using different nitrox analysers.

Wednesday | 6pm - 9pm | Navigation & Computer Theory.

Friday | 7pm | Meet at Newport Marina.

We meet on Friday night and set up our gear for the weekend on the boat. You will need to collect any hire gear prior to arriving at the boat and bring all equipment needed to complete your dives.

Saturday | 6am - 5pm | Day 1.

We will do up to 5 dives on the first day including a night dive, with much needed meals provided by our friendly staff between dives. Course dives will be dependant on site selection and conditions. During surface intervals between dives (when you aren't eating) you are free to use your time watching dvds, sleeping, socialising, reading a book, relaxing in the sun, or whatever takes your fancy at the time.

Sunday | 6am - 4pm | Day 2.

We will do up to 3 dives on the second day and are usually back at the Marina by 4pm. Once again food will be provided between dives.

Thursday (after the completion of your course) | 7pm - 8pm | Graduation BBQ

A great weekend finishes with you as a fully licensed deep diver and we invite you to celebrate with graduation drinks and a BBQ with your newly made diving buddies and friends.
