Byron Bay

Julian Rocks

Located just 2.5 kilometres from Byron Bay, the most easterly point of the Australian mainland and one of Australia's most popular travel destinations, Julian Rocks Marine Park is rated as one of the top scuba diving locations in Australia. The mixing of tropical warm currents with cooler temperate waters makes the diving near Byron Bay unique.

Named by Captain Cook in 1776, Julian Rocks consists of ancient metamorphic rock thrust through the earth’s crust millions of years ago. It is an extension of Cape Byron separated by the ocean and forms a unique habitat providing shelter and food for sea turtles, rays, corals, over 500 different species of fish and many more marine creatures.

Weekend Trip Details

In 2010 we are taking two trips down to Byron Bay, March 14th - 15th and September 18th - 19th.

The weekend begins on Saturday morning 7am at Pro Dive. The bus departs Milton at 7.30am and heads south for an 11am boat departure to Julian Rocks, Byron Bay. The boat ride out is a short 5 minute trip and can be as exciting as the diving with dolphins often accompanying the dive boats. For the September trip, we may even be lucky enough to see the Humpback whales pass Byron Bay on their annual migration.

Typical dive sites around Julian Rocks offer dives that are spectacular to the novice as well as the experienced underwater explorer. They include sites such as The Cod Hole, The Needles, The Cray Cave, Hugo's Trench, The Nursery and Split Bommie. With water temperatures and currents changing throughout the year there are many seasonal visitors. During the September trip the grey nurse sharks will be around and although these sharks look fearsome they are quite shy and are perfectly safe and exciting to dive with. The docile leopard sharks can be seen on almost every dive on the March trip when the waters are between 24°C and 27°C.

Over the weekend we will do a total of four single dives, returning to shore between dives for your surface interval. Aside from the diving, our tour leaders will be organising activites but you are free to come and go as you please, explore the town of Byron, relax on the beach, go shopping, or spend your time however else you wish. It's your weekend away!
